When you hear the word “yoga,” does the image of a super-flexible individual spring to mind? Followed by the thought, “I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible.”? What if I told you that you don’t need to be flexible to do yoga and that all you really need is an open mind…not even a yoga mat!
Yoga isn’t about flexibility. Of course, some parts of yoga involve a degree of flexibility, but not all yoga practices are the same and not everyone has to approach it in the “traditional” way.
Yoga is, in my opinion, a state of being. It’s a collection of tools and movements that you can learn and use to help you to just be for a bit. Whether that’s movement-based yoga on a mat or in a chair, relaxation, breathwork, or a combination of all of them, yoga offers a way to reconnect with yourself.
It gives you the time and space to tune into your body, to notice what you need, to ease out areas of physical tension and calm the racing thoughts or stresses that run through your mind. With yoga, you can take time to rise above all of that—not to ignore life (because life is life) but to accept and acknowledge it, without judgment and simply be for a while. “Gorra 'av five, duck.”

I’m a Stokey-based yoga teacher. I’ve practiced yoga for around 17 years and have been qualified to teach for the past 18 months. I offer gentle, accessible classes both on the mat and through a growing community of Chair Yoga. Yoga isn’t my full-time job, but it’s a true passion and I teach locally with care and joy.
Many of my students are completely new to it or are coming back to it after a long break. I’ve heard a lot of the same questions and concerns from people thinking about trying yoga, so, if any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone:
“Do I need to be flexible?”
Not at all! Flexibility isn’t a starting requirement it’s something that gently develops through practice. Yoga meets you where you are.
“I haven’t exercised in years.”
That’s okay. Many students come to yoga after long breaks. My classes are gentle and welcoming and we go at a pace that suits you.
“I have a medical condition.”
This is very common. While I always recommend checking with your doctor first, many conditions can be supported by yoga. We can adapt poses and chair-based yoga is an option for those who need something more accessible.
“I’m 85 you know - isn’t that too old?”
Not at all! Some of my students are in their 80s and they’ve found real joy and relief in yoga. My oldest yoga student so far is 93.
“What if I can’t get up and down from the floor?”
You don’t have to! Chair Yoga is a fully supported practice that brings all the benefits of movement, breath and mindfulness without needing to be on the floor.
“I’ll feel embarrassed.”
That’s completely normal, especially when trying something new. My classes are welcoming, kind, and non-judgmental. Everyone’s focused on their own experience—not what anyone else is doing.
“I have no idea what to expect.”
That’s okay too. A typical class includes simple movement, breathing techniques and time for relaxation. I guide you through everything—there’s no pressure, no perfect pose, just space to be.
Remember, whether you’re male, female, any age or in any physical condition—you can practice yoga. It’s very accessible. You just need to find the right teacher and the right class for you.
